High Street Carshalton
Brief:
This backland derelict site is situated in a conservation area in Carshalton, adjacent to a Grade 2 listed building. The brief was to maximise the potential of the site by locating 2-3 dwellings on the site.
Due to the limitations of being a conservation area, the design of the houses are traditional and retain many features of the neighbouring buildings within the conservation area, including corbelling of brickwork, dormer size, fenestration and mass. This is because it can be viewed from the public car park for the nearby Grove Park.
The houses have a much improved landscaped garden to the front and small private garden to the rear. Each house has an open plan kitchen-living-dining space on the ground floor with 3 double bedrooms above.
There is also a small 2 bedroom flat proposed in an alcove section of the site with a centralised courtyard which would allow light into the rear of the flat. It is to have a tapered roof to minimise the impact on the neighbouring properties.
