The Hope - Carshalton
The Hope Pub in Carshalton is unique in many ways but primarily stands out due to its ownership. The pub is owned by its patrons. When the premises came up for sale in 2016, 38 members of the local community decided to get together and buy the pub outright and started to run it themselves. Since that time, the pub has been transformed into one of the most desirable ale pubs in South London, regularly winning awards for its ale selection and festivals.
Although part of the appeal of the pub is the nooks & crannies and snugs scattered around the pub, which provide different environments for the wide-ranging clientele. However, the facilities for the pub were in very poor condition and were in much need of modernisation. KJC Architects were appointed to design a two-storey rear extension and reconfiguration of the pub. The extension was to include a 75sqm new basement to house the wide arrange of ales supplied by The Hope and the ground floor was to provide a new toilet block, billiards playing area, extended seating area for restaurant and a link to the external courtyard.
